The first day of school is September 4 for all grades. Are you ready? Are you looking forward to meeting your teachers? Have you finished your summer reading? Do you have all of your school supplies? Here is some important information to help you prepare.


What’s New for 2018-19?

  • All third grade students will be at Windham Center School
  • Golden Brook School will continue to house Pre-Kindergarten through Grade 2 during the 2018-19 school year. Students will move into the new building in order for the construction team to shift focus to the reconstruction of the other GBS buildings. Four Grade 1 classrooms and all Grade 2 classrooms will transfer into the new building. Pre-Kindergarten and Kindergarten classrooms will remain in the same area. A new modular has been placed onsite and will house two Guidance Counselors, the Special Education Director, Principal Hunt, Assistant Principal Martin, the Main Office and the Nurse’s Office, and four Grade 1 classrooms. While these classrooms will be placed in the modulars, they will have their specials (library, gym, digital literacy) in the new building along with lunch and recess with their peers. As with the other Grade 1 classrooms, music and art will be held in individual classrooms.
  • This year, students will receive digital literacy and computer science instruction in grades K - 8.
  • Also new this year, Grade 3 to 5 students will learn Spanish.
  • We are also pleased to welcome seven exchange students from China to Windham High School as part of our new global education program.
  • Introduction of Concurrent Enrollment Program with Northern Essex Community College  

A-Z Guide of Helpful Information for the Upcoming School Year

Bus Information:

As a reminder, we encourage all students to take the bus to ensure safety. If your child will not be participating in the busing program for the upcoming school year, please notify the district at the earliest convenience in order that we can adjust routes and schedules accordingly. Bus routes will be available as we get closer to the first day of school and can be found under the “For Parents” section on www.windhamsd.org. You may also contact the bus company directly at bus@windhamsd.org with questions.

Communications:

Events and helpful information for families will be posted on the Windham School District website along with each of the schools websites which can be accessed at www.windhamsd.org. Each of the schools will be sending newsletters and emails to families. New Schools Construction Project:

Our new schools construction project has entered Phase II and continues to be on time and on budget. Details on the construction project as well as a video tour and photos can be found on our website at www.windhamsd.org.  


Nutrition Services/School Menus:

Breakfast and lunch is available for purchase at all Windham Schools. Menus will become available later this month and can be found on www.windhamsd.org under the Administration/Nutrition Services section.  


One-to-One Technology - ChromeBooks and MacBooks:

Each student in the district will be equipped with 1:1 technology. With 1:1 technology, the Windham School District is able to provide a 21st century learning environment and effectively integrate technology into curriculum and instruction to improve student learning, increase learning opportunities, and encourage the use of different and innovative teaching methods. The Windham School District distributes MacBook Airs to every student entering grades 9-12, Chromebooks to every student entering grades 2-8, and iPad resources to kindergarten and grade 1 students.


PowerSchool Unified Classroom Utilized In Grades K through 12:

This year, the PowerSchool Parent Portal will be available at every grade level. PowerSchool streamlines communications and will help keep students and parents informed of upcoming assignments, grades, classroom activities and other important information. Tutorials and documents will be provided to parents in order to get their PowerSchool Unified Classroom accounts up and running.


Ready Set Go:

Studies have found that adding more recess time improves academic performance. Ready Set Go will once again take place at Golden Brook School and Windham Center School. Children will spend this time on the playground, weather permitting. The additional recess time can be found below:

Kindergarten and Grade 2, Golden Brook School : 8:20 to 8:40 am

Grade 1, Golden Brook School:  8:40 to 9 am

Windham Center School: 8:15 to 8:35 am


School Delays and Closings:

Our school cancellation policy is as follows:

The decision to cancel school on a particular school day will usually be made by 6 am. When appropriate, the district may also employ a delayed opening of Two (2) Hours (120 Minutes). If a delayed opening will change to school cancelation that announcement will be made no later than 7 am. School cancellations are made via the SchoolMessenger system, posted on the district's Facebook and Twitter pages as well as broadcast on several radio and television stations.

As a reminder, the District contracted last year with SchoolMessenger Solutions as our provider for parent notifications.  


Emergency Messages and Attendance Calls

Parents/Legal Guardians are automatically enrolled based on the information provided during the InfoSnap registration process. Cell phone numbers may be entered as the primary home number. Cell phone and email options will also be utilized. Please bookmark the SchoolMessenger page provided during the InfoSnap registration page or refer to the information below for instructions on how to opt-in to receive text messages and to designate message preferences. Also, it is strongly recommended that you provide personal email addresses during InfoSnap registration as work email addresses have had a tendency to block SchoolMessenger messages. If during the course of the school year you need to change contact information or address, please contact the school directly.   


infoCenter – Preferences

SchoolMessenger offers a variety of ways for parents and guardians to manage their communications preferences.  You can download the InfoCenter mobile app from Google Play or the Apple App Store, as well as sign up online by visiting infocenter.schoolmessenger.com, which will also be available as a link via your PowerSchool Parent Portal account.  In InfoCenter you may designate which of your numbers you wish to opt-in for text messages or select email only for newsletters and other non-emergency announcements.  For more information about SchoolMessenger and InfoCenter, please download the following document or visit our district website to learn more. Student IDs:

Students at Windham Middle School and Windham High School will be provided with student identification cards. Students are required to have them on their person and will be required for printing documents, borrowing library books, etc. A $5 replacement fee will be charged to students for lost cards and can be paid via PayPal on the school websites under Links.


Volunteering in Windham Schools:

Windham Schools love our volunteers and we welcome family volunteers for classroom help, field trips and holiday parties. As a reminder, our volunteers need to be fingerprinted and go through a background check, which can take several weeks. For those who are interested in volunteering and have not yet gone through the process, we encourage you to begin the process over the summer in order to be ready for the fall, as we have been experiencing some recent delays. Volunteer packets with detailed instructions must be obtained from the SAU or any of the schools.


The following outlines important GBS events:


GBS School Hours:

Grades 1 and 2: 8:40 am to 2:50 pm

Kindergarten: Morning Session, 8:40 to 11:10 am; Afternoon Session, 12:15 to 2:50 pm

Preschool: Morning Session, 9 to 11:30 am; Afternoon Session, 12:25 to 2:55 pm

Drop-off: Morning drop-off begins at 8:20 am; Afternoon Kindergarten/Preschool drop-off begins at 12:15 pm

Early Release Day Hours: Dismissal at 12 pm. No afternoon kindergarten, KIP or preschool. Morning kindergartners and KIP students must be picked up at 11:10 am

School Delay Day Hours: School will begin at 10:40am. In the event of a school delay, there will not be any morning kindergarten or preschool and no morning recess

Kindergarten Bus Ride and Meet & Greet:

Thursday, 8/30

Parents MUST bring students to Windham High School for the trial bus ride to Golden Brook School. All bus rides begin in the back of the building.

11 am Students and parents arrive at the back of WHS to board buses

11:10 am Buses leave for Golden Brook School

11:20 am Buses arrive at Golden Brook School

11:25 to 11:55 am Classroom visit

12 pm Morning kindergarten students and parents return to WHS

Open House Information:

The GBS Open House provides an opportunity for families to meet with their child/children’s teachers and learn more about what they will be learning during the course of the year. We encourage both parents/guardians as well as students to attend.

9/27, 6:30 to 8 pm Preschool and Grade 2


Picture Day:

Friday, 9/28

Please note picture ordering forms will be sent home with your students prior to picture day. However, pictures can also be ordered online through our school photographer.
